Hes still the same guy, just in a different place in his life.
Its not that there isnt any interaction.
Weve certainly had conversations about ideas about where the character is going, where hes coming from.
Hes older, theres a different kind of vulnerability.
Hes not part of the police organization anymore.
The idea of that is very appealing to me.
The only chink in his armor is the safety and the protection of his daughter.
So that primordial instinct to protect his child makes him formidable and makes for interesting storytelling.
And, he cant pull a badge anymore.
Hes made a lot of enemies in the police department because hes a guy whos righteous.
He might be circuitous in his process, but he is not dishonest and hes not corrupt.
Hes apolitical, which is part of his undoing in this final season.
He refuses to magnetize his moral compass based on the political ambitions of people within the government.
Youd have to ask my family.
Im certainly not an actor who has to stay in character all the time.
I dont bring Harrys angst home with me.
I think Ive just become protective of the character and the brand, for lack of a better word.
I know this character very, very well.
The beauty of the character is that hes consistent.
I identify with that because I have that with my own daughter, whos 15.
The similarities between myself and my daughter are very, very palpable.
Knocking heads, we both find ourselves going, Oh, theres the rub.
How did that affect the writing and production? We were not likeLaw & Order.
They take things directly from the headlines as a foundation for episodes.
Our source materials are the books of Michael Connelly.
We are not a recruiting film for the police department.
Its not that we think,No,we dont want to be controversial.
Were controversial in our own way, and the world and life are controversial enough as it is.
We depict it in its truest state.
Nobody is ever going to accuse our show of pandering one way or the other.
Theres also humor in the show.
Were really shameless, but in the best possible way.
There are so many Easter eggs we throw in.
Harrys dog, Coltrane I chose that breed of dog because I loveThe Road Warrior.
Its one of my favorite flicks.
Mad Maxs dog is an Australian cattle dog.
So, good enough for Mad Max has gotta be good enough for Harry Bosch.
And youve also had to live up to the expectations of the book fans.
I have my own prejudices.
When Im reading a book, I cast the film.
But what I realized was that it was a fools errand.
Its not possible to ever like everyone.
Im not any of those guys, so its hit or miss.
Fortunately, it would seem that people, by and large, have embraced the show.
I mean, some people like Swiss cheese, some people like Cheddar.
Thats my dairy analogy for the day.
