When I look back at the most memorable moments fromThe Mandalorians second season, several things stand out.

There was Baby Yodavibing on the rock.

She needs Mando to help her reunite with her husband so that the eggs can be fertilized.

Its a very moving little story, except that its plagued by Baby Yoda in full Troublesome Toddler mode.

And hekeepseating them, even after Mando tells him not to.

I am no stranger to complaining aboutThe Mandalorianand its depiction of parenting.

Tsk-tsking about an absence of Baby Yoda diapering scenes is petty, but it speaks toThe Mandalorians priorities.

In season one, Baby Yoda was not really a child.

He was a prop to spur Mandos development.

From that perspective, the outrage against Baby Yoda, frog-egg-eater, really surprised me.

(Aside from saying No, dont do that, which obviously did squat.)

Was it comic relief?

Or was it meant to be disturbing?

If it wasmeant to be disturbing, then fine the show has acknowledged the behavior is cruel.

Its hard to read that sequence on its own.

But it makes clear that season twos little egg-eating scenes are more than possibly misguided comic relief.

Theyre additional evidence of why this decision matters so much.

And yet I nevertheless found it surprisingly moving.

Its a clarifying moment.

The egg-eating sequence was not the only moment like this in season two.

And this isStar Wars.

The dark side is always right there, waiting.

The really effective emotion of that moment (the helmet!

I teared up!)

Mandos loss is greater, but so is our awareness of how important it is to get this right.

It made their love more complicated, and more tender.

And if theyre not reunited in season three I will burn this whole thing to the ground.
