Its almost impossible to critique because it doesnt go full tilt in the direction of any particular decision.

You cant judge their choices, because neither of them has made a real decision.

Neither of their spouses knows the truth of where they are, or that theyve reconciled.

But theyve managed to commit to seeing each other on what is implied to be a fairly regular basis.

Each of their lives has changed significantly since their one-time marriage.

Now, their roles are reversed.

But Alicia has finally gotten her hands on that commercial space, and her interior design business is thriving.

Alicia tells Denise that she resented her while they were married.

Relationships are messy, and they dont always work.

When they were married, they didnt have space to accommodate each other in their lives.

The catch, of course, is that theyre having an affair.

And curiously, Waithe doesnt come down on either side of that decision in the writing.

We cannot talk about the thing or else the thing will make us spiral.

Importantly though, we never meet these new wives.

We learn their names, but theyre spoken about in quasi-hushed tones, a rudeness theyd rather not acknowledge.

Now, they get a do-over.

Its a choice few would defend, but it makes a kind of emotional sense.

What makes it confusing is why this revelation needs to be accompanied by deceit.

Polyamorous relationships arent for everyone, and they require work, honesty, and commitment.

But theyarean option that would allow Alicia and Denise to have their cake and eat it too.

But the women are more than aware of the limits on their love for each other.

Breaking up was what made them ready to come back together.

Even if that never happens for them, maybe its enough that they have this brief respite.
