His sudden deathreportedlycame a day after he celebrated Thanksgiving with friends in Roxbury, Connecticut.

He thought he wasnt good enough.

We said, Yes Steve, its OK.

I sang it that night.

That night the director Mike Nichols was in the audience.

He came down to Patinkin after the performance, and embraced him.

It was all about Finishing the Hat.

Did he plan to have those moments?

I think he did not.

Patinkin asks himself, I got to be in the room with Shakespeare.

Was he able to feel our love for him?

Could he let it in, or was the wound too great?

Sharing the interview, Patinkin tweeted more words on the passing of Sondheim.

Read his, and others tweets below:

The guy who wrote my prayers has died.

His words were my Torah.

Sondheim wrote what he wished for himself and the world at large.

We’ll be learning from his work as long as people are singing songs and beyond.

Thank you Steve.https://t.co/fUEQJMZ6Qw

Future historians: Stephen Sondheim was real.

We shall be singing your songs forever.

Oh, my heart hurts…

Every so often someone comes along that fundamentally shifts an entire art form.

Stephen Sondheim was one of those.

No need to even talk about how you changed what we do.

Thank you

Stephen Sondheim.

Let the endless tributes begin.

He wrote me a wonderful permission letter to use Old Friends in American Gods.

I avoided meeting him (failed only once) and refused dinner because I didnt have many heroes.

Now Ive got one less.

Thank you Stephen Sondheim so much.pic.twitter.com/soRo4G2ZFU

Stephen Sondheim was the best there ever was.

I dont know when we will ever have another of his caliber, of his breadth and scope.

Just the greatest, a legend, a true titan.

Performing his work has been among the greatest privileges of my career.

Stephen Sondheim’s legacy of song and lyric is unparalleled.

Pacific Overtures with the great master himself.

What an honor it was to perform your work.

RIP Stephen Sondheim.pic.twitter.com/5MI2Y1JBLM

He only wrote one screenplay, but its an absolute gem of a whodunnit.

(Co-written with Anthony Perkins, no less).

RIP xpic.twitter.com/Cqd2FpUgtw

thank you so muchfor something betweenridiculous and sublime#StephenSondheim

I am at a loss.

Feels like the end of an era.

Never did I expect this letter, which arrived in my dressing room the next day.

What extraordinary kindness & generosity.

Here’s to you, Stephen.

Broadway has lost a musical genius.

There will never be another like Stephen Sondheim.

The greatest loss to theatre imaginable.

I met him once for 30 seconds backstage after a production of Merrily We Roll Along.

I have never been more tongue tied or star struck.

His writing is the singular reason I wanted to be a musical theater actor.

No one will ever come close to his genius.

Rest In Peace Stephen Sondheim.

You gave us something new.

You changed the game.

I was so lucky.pic.twitter.com/iF3iMKd5YJ

As a writer, I think what I am is an actor.

They dont have to act against it.

His words for West Side Story alone would have guaranteed him theatrical immortality but there was so much more.

He bestrode songwriting like a Colossus.

In college, again, the same, I had small parts in Into The Woods and Assassins.

They say theres no small parts but man, these parts felt small.

It was a two person play and we did 9 performances a week.

One night Stephen Sondheim came to see it and he met him backstage.

Youre the star of your own show.

Just keep doing that.

I think that was great advice.

Must be nice to live a long life and leave so much behind.

Very sad to hear of the passing of the great Stephen Sondheim.

I was fortunate to meet him and chat about songwriting.

He was a witty intelligent man.

‘Send in the Clowns’ is one of my favourite songs.

So well crafted and beautiful with it.

But Stephen Sondheim could do it all and made it look easy.

He was an incredible gift to the Broadway stage.

He will be sorely missed.

Everybody rise!pic.twitter.com/iWo3xcVh8g

He left us with so many words, but none enough for this post.

Goodbye, old pal.

RIP legend, icon, greatest composer Mr. Stephen Sondheim!

The angels must be singing sir…..Godspeed!

Thank you for leaving an incredible legacy https://t.co/k2qKxLjqHY

Sondheim has left us.

But, oh man, he left so much behind for us.

Hard to fathom that he was in fact mortal like the rest of us.

But bow lucky are we to have lived in the world at the same time as this great man.

No one can replace him.
